Robert Scales, Ph.D., is a native of Scotland, but he has resided in the Southwest for the past twenty years. Currently he is the Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation and Wellness at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, where he has been instrumental in the development of the Heart Health and Performance Program, which is an initiative to prevent heart disease. He has his doctorate degree in education and he holds a faculty position in the School of Medicine at the University of New Mexico, where he conducts research and teaches motivational interviewing (MI). He was the Principal Investigator in the Cardiovascular Health Initiative and Lifestyle Education (CHILE) Study, the first study to investigate the impact of MI and skills-based counseling on the behaviors of patients attending cardiac rehabilitation (CR). Dr. Scales has counseled thousands of patients who were recovering from heart disease. He is also an accomplished international speaker on the topic of disease prevention. Adaptations of his work using MI with clinical populations have focused on the prevention and management of diabetes in Native American communities and he continues to work extensively with the Indian Health Service as a consultant. Dr. Scales is an experienced trainer in MI and he has trained both students and clinicians from a variety of healthcare disciplines to use the approach within their own clinical settings. He is also a member of the International Association of MI Trainers and he was trained by the originators of the approach, William Miller and Stephen Rollnick. Dr. Scales is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and he is a Fellow of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). | ||||||||||||
